The Manheim Touchdown Club was founded in 1998 as a non-profit organization “for the purpose of development, promotion and support of Manheim scholastic football, including recognition and financial aid for exceptional student athletes within the greater community”.
Initially, Coach Mike Williams and Founding President, Jerry Kulp brought together a small group of Manheim area business leaders to discuss ways in which to fund football related capital projects which could otherwise not be funded through the Manheim Central School District budget. These discussions led to the consideration of developing other initiatives such as financial scholarships and other awards through which outstanding student-athletes might be recognized. Through the efforts of the initial nucleus of individuals, the membership grew to thirty four (34) charter members in 1998.
During this early phase, the expanded membership worked to develop criteria, by which scholarships and other awards would be made; demonstrated character, high scholastic achievement and proven athletic ability. These characteristics continue to form the cornerstone of Manheim Touchdown Club today.
Beginning in 1999, Manheim Touchdown Club has held an annual banquet. Manheim Central student athletes, representing fifteen different varsity sports have received scholarships totaling $90,000 through 2012. Also at those banquets the Manheim Touchdown Club has recognized forty one Lancaster Lebanon League football players for their accomplishments on the field during their high school careers. In addition, Manheim Touchdown Club has recognized twenty three former Lancaster Lebanon League players for their on field performance at the college level during the immediate past season. Traditionally these players have played at the NCAA Division I A or I AA levels. Recognizing that presenting only one college award would necessarily put NCAA Division II and Division III players at a disadvantage, Manheim Touchdown Club elected to present two college awards beginning in 2004. The “Big School Award” honors a player from either a Division I A or I AA university and the Dr. Gene A. Carpenter Award honors a player from a Division II or Division III college.
In 2005 the Club announced the creation of a new award. The Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award. This award will go to the top offensive or defensive lineman in the nation each year as voted on by the 150 Division II Sports Information Directors.
